TRANS is an intimate experimental documentary focusing on transgender female, Kali. Exploring themes of transformation and identity, the film constructs various scenes based on her thoughts, feelings and imaginings as she reflects on influences and choices that formed her attitudes towards her gender dysphoria. A formally and thematically complex hybrid of photographic and cinematic technique, the film was shot as a series of high-resolution still images using slow shutter speeds. This captured motion was then reconstructed as an animated video sequence by editing the images together, allowing me to author scenes where actions can be accentuated by being lengthened, shortened or even entirely deleted.

At night, Ryan is on the streets where there are other youth at loose ends, including one who wants Ryan to help with a burglary. The police are looking for him as well. Where might a 16-year-old of limited experience, with no money, imagine he could be safe?
With trans, Martin Siewert and I used the 5 act structure of classical drama to create an atmosphere of in-between-ness and levitation. I found these old photographs of a harbor that totally embodied this emotion (also the sadness and melancholy of parting and saying goodbye). So I used them as my starting images and worked through the layers of the images, scratched away the unnecessary until I reached the essence.
